Frequently asked questions
Are a UPC and an EAN the same product?
Yes. A UPC-A is an EAN-13 whose first digit is zero. Same item, written on 12 or 13 digits depending on the region.
Why does my EAN have no UPC equivalent?
Only EAN-13 codes starting with 0 can be written as UPC-A. A European code starting with 3 or 4 has no UPC version.
What is a GTIN-14 for?
It identifies a logistics unit: a case of 12, a pallet. The first digit gives the packaging level.
Does the check digit change when converting?
It stays the same between UPC-A and EAN-13, because the added zero does not affect the calculation. For a GTIN-14 it is recomputed.
