Frequently asked questions
Does the prefix show where the product was made?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. It shows the country of the GS1 organisation the company bought its prefix from. A product made in China can carry a French prefix.
What does a code starting with 20 to 29 mean?
That range is reserved for in-store use: weighed goods, fresh produce, own labels. These codes mean nothing outside that shop.
What about codes starting with 978 or 979?
Those are ISBNs, meaning books. 977 is for periodicals (ISSN).
Why does my EAN-8 have no country?
Short EAN-8 codes are often issued internally and do not always carry a usable country prefix.
